Praise for the RamBox has also been strong. Copy editor Rusty Blackwell managed to squeeze a (compact) golf bag into one side of the RamBox, thought he was quick to point out "this is the same golf bag that fit behind the seats of the Audi R8." Road test coordinator Mike Ofiara took the Ram to northern Michigan for a long weekend and noticed a man inspecting the RamBox when he came out of a party store. Apparently the man thought the RamBox would conflict with the traditional duties of a truck, so he measured the bed and said: "Well, maybe they [Dodge] were thinking, it's four-foot across." If you don't recognize the significance of a four-foot-wide truck bed, that's the minimum width needed to transport a full sheet of drywall or plywood -- certainly a requirement for any real full-size truck.
Our Ram continues to rack up some serious mileage, and that necessitated another oil change at 19,539 miles. The local dealer also tightened and inspected the serpentine belt during the service visit. A 5000-mile service interval means $45.73 service visits are rather frequent for us, but the cost isn't unreasonable. We've also had good experiences with our dealer each time.
Though our fleet doesn't typically feature many pickup trucks, senior editor Joe Lorio recently drove a Toyota Tundra and then spent time in the Ram the next day. He compares and contrasts the two trucks like this:
"I just had a Toyota Tundra back east yesterday, and now I'm driving the Ram here today. The Toyota V-8 is utterly silent at idle, where Dodge's Hemi emits a low rumble. The Toyota's steering is overboosted, while Dodge effort feels right to me. Both trucks ride amazingly well. Both are huge, but it seemed to me that the Tundra had a slightly tighter turning circle [Tundra 44 ft, Ram 45.4 ft]. The lack of a rear-view camera is absurd in a high-dollar pickup like this. The interior of the more basic-spec Toyota was not nearly as fancy as this Ram; more surprising is that the Ram's cabin has suffered no wear to date, despite racking up the miles."
As we head into the fall hunting season, the Ram is already signed out a week or two in advance. The need to close up summer cabins, haul boats and campers to winter storage, as well as the impetus to finish those last-minute home improvements before winter sets in will likely ensure the Ram remains our most in-demand Four Seasons test vehicle for the next few months. Be sure to check back next month to see how many more miles we can pile on our truck.

Time for a new Dodge Caliber!
Chrysler said its Belvidere, Illinois, plant that produces the Dodge Caliber will return to a second-shift operation starting October 5, adding 850 workers.
The action is in addition to the automaker's plans announced on Tuesday to raise production by more than 50,000 units this year at seven North American plants, after sales spurred by the popular "Cash-for-Clunkers" incentives.
Chrysler has not provided its initial production plans for the rest of the year.
Chrysler's sales fell 15 percent in August, partly due to inventory shortages related to extensive plant shutdowns during its bankruptcy restructuring this summer.
"We are taking this action in response to increasing demand for our most fuel-efficient products," said Michael J. Accavitti, who heads the Dodge Brand.
"However, we are cautious about the continued volatility in the industry and will monitor demand in order to respond to market conditions," Accavitti said.

Chrysler Town and Country - One of the Best!
Stop by Cowboy Dodge for an incredible deal on the new Chrysler Town and Country.
Why you should consider it: Though minivans draw horrified reactions from some suburban snobs, their space is much more efficient and comfortable than most SUVs. Chrysler knows what little kids like: The Town & Country has swiveling seats that let the second and third rows face each other (with a table in the middle), and rear-seat entertainment systems to let the kids watch Wall-E with wireless headphones. The Town & Country comes in seven trims - have it your way - and can be ordered with front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive. We like the standard 3.3-liter V-6 engine because it provides plenty of power, but you can move up to a somewhat thirsty 3.8-liter V-6 for more horsepower. Although the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey are worthy alternatives, the Town & Country offers alluring cash incentives.
The reviewers say: "The latest hauler from the company that invented the minivan in the early 1980s, the Town & Country is Chrysler's best and most sophisticated yet." -Forbes
Price check: $26,415 (LX), plus up to $4,500 in cash incentives - or zero to 2.9 percent financing plus $1,000 cash on 2009 models.
Fuel economy: 17 city/25 highway (3.3-liter LX)

Cash For Clunkers
That old car collecting dust in the driveway could be worth some serious cash. In June, Congress passed a new law called CARS (Cash Allowance Rebate System), this allows you to cash in your older gas-guzzling vehicle for a new, more efficient one. Eligible consumers are able to receive a rebate from the U.S. Government for up to $4,500 toward the purchase of a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle before November 1, 2009 .

Electric Jeep coming soon?
Although it isn't the world's first electric Jeep (DJ-5e, anyone?), the 2010 Jeep Wrangler EV, given a new coat of paint for the 2009 Detroit auto show, is a bit more advanced.
For the most part, automakers working on extended-range electric vehicles (EERVs) are crafting them out of small, fuel-efficient compact cars. Bucking that trend, Chrysler's demonstrated their technology with both a minivan and the Wrangler - a body-on-frame SUV. Granted, this Jeep is only a two-wheel-drive model, but if Chrysler's figures hold true, the fuel economy gains are quite impressive.
As with most EERVs, the Wrangler Unlimited EV runs as an electric vehicle so long as its lithium-ion batteries hold a charge. Chrysler claims they'll power the 200-kW (268 hp) electric motor up to 40 miles, before a small gasoline engine kicks in. The internal-combustion engine doesn't physically drive the rear wheels, but acts as a generator and feeds electricity to both the battery and the electric motor. In total, Chrysler says the combination of battery and generator power is enough to travel 400 miles on a ten-gallon tank of fuel.
A downside? We think Jeep fans would prefer a four-wheel-drive Wrangler, and though Chrysler's ENVI group says it's working on one - complete with in-wheel electric motors up front - it's still a ways away from reality. A Wrangler like this, however, could feasibly reach production between 2010 and 2013.
