That old car collecting dust in the driveway could be worth some serious cash. In June, Congress passed a new law called CARS (Cash Allowance Rebate System), this allows you to cash in your older gas-guzzling vehicle for a new, more efficient one. Eligible consumers are able to receive a rebate from the U.S. Government for up to $4,500 toward the purchase of a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle before November 1, 2009 .

Things to know
-Your vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the trade-in date
-Only purchase of new vehicles qualify ($3,500 or $4,500 rebate depending on trade-in)
-Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG (some very large pick-up trucks and cargo vans have different requirements)
-Trade-in vehicles must be registered and insured continuously for the full year preceding the trade-in.
